Family Craft Project: Valentine Prints

As I was getting all my Valentine decorations out, I realized I didn’t have much for the walls.  I had lots of things to sit around, but aside from a wreath or two, not much to hand or prop as a background.

So, I went to Pinterest to find an easy craft that might look good in my house.   I always seem to find more than enough ideas on Pinterest.   If you haven’t followed me there yet, please do.

I found this Valentine Prints idea.   You use everyone in the families fingerprints to create a work of art.Valentine Print Project

So I got the original idea from The Mad House.

I basically followed her directions, but made my heart a bit smaller, and I think my canvas was larger too.  I also wrote our family name in the center.  Just felt it needed something there.

So here are my instructions for making this….step by step.

Supplies

  • 2016-01-24 16.37.05 edRed Acrylic Paint
  • White Acrylic Paint
  • Paper Plate or containers
  • White Canvas
  • Heart cut out of paper – I used a sheet of magazine paper.
  • Tape
  • Red Marker

Instructions

1.  Cut a heart shape out of paper.

2.  Tape the heart shape onto the canvas by creating a tape loop and taping  on the back.  Do not use tape around edges of heart.

3.  Be sure to use a plastic cloth or newspaper under your work area.

4.  Put red paint on plate or container.   Make separate globs of paint.  At least three.

5.  Add different amounts of white paint to two globs of red.   Leave one totally red.

6.  Mix the white and red.   One should have more white and be light pink.  One medium or dark pink.

7.  Stick your fingers in the paint and then put your fingerprints on the canvas.  Each person should make multiple sets of prints in the various colors.

9.  Also put prints on the sides of the canvas.

10.  Allow canvas to dry.

11.  Remove the heart and the tape.

12. After canvas is dry, use a Red Sharpie to add your last name or the word LOVE to the center of the heart.

13.  I suggest adding the date with the Sharpie near the bottom or on the side.

Project Complete!

This is how it looks in my house.

I originally wanted it on a wall, but it seemed too small for the spot I had planned, so I needed something on this Hoosier Cabinet and it worked great there.  Perfect size.

I went back to Pinterest for something larger for my wall.   Stay tuned…I will post about it later in the week.

This is a perfect project for getting everyone in the family involved and having a keepsake of everyone’s fingerprints.

There is still time to make this for Valentine’s Day 2016.
